Jamie Hoyland believes that he learnt a lot about the new crop of young players going through the Preston North End youth ranks following the reserves 1-0 victory against Tranmere Rovers at the QED Stadium.
Speaking to pne.com, Hoyland, who took the reserve team in the absence of manager David Unsworth praised his inexperienced side's attitude.
"I learnt a lot about some of the players who haven't had many games this season, but our attitude was fantastic," Hoyland said.
"They had a lot of ability against Tranmere, they showed me that they could play. The first years that made their debut in the reserves were fantastic and a massive plus was the Under 16 Naz El-Haratti who was fantastic.
"Once he got over his initial nerves in the first five minutes, he looked like he was a second year scholar, he did fantastic, so we were really pleased with that. But we know he has got that, we just wondered if he could cope with that at this early stage."
North End scored in the 6th minute of play and held on to their lead for the remainder of the game. Hoyland was slightly disappointed that his side didn't extend their lead in the first half but has hailed the attitude that his young reserves showed.
"I said to them at half time that I was disappointed that we weren't more up. We played some really good football, we defended really well and I thought we might have needed another goal, obviously because of the experience that they have got. Shaun Garnett and Les Parry would have got into them at half time a little bit and they certainly came onto us in the second half.
"I saw another side of us though which me and Dean (Ramsdale) mentioned when I saw the side, they never looked to get beat but they really dug in. For such an inexperienced side, it is a great attribute to have and they just didn't want to lose the match, fair play to them I don't think that they deserved to and I was really chuffed for them afterwards."
The scorer of the games only goal was centre back Dominic Collins who at almost 19-years-old was the oldest player for Preston. However, Hoyland was quick to praise the defensive partnership he struck up with Captain and first year scholar Bailey Wright.
"Dominic is not your prominent centre half, Bailey Wright was in the side who decided to sort out the big centre forward for them and Dom picked up the scraps.
"To be honest, Dom fitted into our team really and got on with it because if there is one thing about them, they all try to be leaders and set an example and I thought that was what they did very well."
This was the first chance for Hoyland to see the future crop of youth team players play at reserve team level and the youth team Gaffer is excited by the players being filtered through at Preston.
"It has given me a real idea now as we get to the end of the season because obviously I am going to be losing a lot of players next year. The lads that are coming through though are going to be of the same quality, if not better than what we are having so that is fantastic for me, for the Club and for the ongoing future.
"Seanan Clucas has waited for his time to play in the youth team never mind the reserves and he ran for 90 minutes and showed me what he can do. Bailey has captained the reserves in his first game and was fantastic against a forward who has played a lot of times in Tranmere's first team.
"It reiterated what good players that I have got and I am as pleased for the players as I am for myself after that, they all took to the stage and did really well."
