PNEWFC bounced back from their early exit at the UCLan tournament in fantastic fashion with a 12-2 drubbing of an American Touring College side.
Five goals from prolific striker Hannah Bailey and a hat trick from Lynette Craig helped Preston seal a convincing win. Angela Willoughby also got on the scoresheet alongside substitutes Christina Skull and Sarah Walker for Andy Burgess's side.
With as little as six minutes on the clock Preston took the lead as Craig grabbed the first of her three goals, but had the visitors goalkeeper to thank for the goal as she dropped the shot.
The second goal soon followed a few minutes later, as North End stamped their authority on the game when Bailey nodded in a Laura Walker cross on the goal line.
The Lilywhites were stroking the ball around with confidence, looking very positive in their play with their new look 4-3-3 formation.
PNE's third goal which came in the 32nd minute was created by Channi O'Hara and finished off by Bailey. The move was started when Walker, who switched from right to left wing, cut inside her marker to play the ball to O'Hara, who was in acres of space. With time on her hands, O'Hara played the ball through to striker Bailey. With work still to do, Bailey skipped past her marker to slot home sealing great team goal.
Bailey's hat trick was confirmed moments later, with another superbly taken goal proving she will be very important to her team's ambitions this season. Holding midfielder Tammy Burgess cleared the ball following an American attack. The ball was launched deep into the oppositions half, and Bailey showed her lightning pace beating the defender to the ball and cleverly rounded the goalkeeper to tap the ball into an empty net
The goals kept flooding in as Preston made it five in the 40th minute, and Craig, who was playing on the right of a three man attack, got her second of the evening. O'Hara, who was one of very few positives from Sunday's tournament, chipped the ball over the top of the back four, for Craig to latch onto and stroke past the American goalkeeper.
Six was the magic number as the home side were starting to show their attacking quality that saw them being one of the highest scorers in the division last season. A great delivery from winger Walker was hit on the volley with force by Bailey inside the penalty area, clipping the post before going in.
There was a shock before the half time whistle as the visitors grabbed a goal, which going off their first half performance was undeserved. Preston switched off allowing the American College team to hit them on the break, with a calmly taken finish beating keeper Emma Reader.
North End soon redeemed themselves early in the second half, as Craig sealed her hat trick in the 47th minute. Willoughby's in swinging corner wasn't cleared properly by the American defence allowing Craig to scramble the ball over the line.
Bailey grabbed her impressive fifth of the game in the 52nd minute making the score line 8 goals to 1. O'Hara was an integral part of the goal, showing why she was selected to represent England in the World Youth Cup in Sweden a couple of weeks ago. The attacking midfielder skilfully with the outside of the boot dinked her pass over the last defender for the run of Bailey. The speedy striker raced through on goal unchallenged to calmly stroke the ball past the keeper.
Manager Andy Burgess rang the changes in the 55th minute with goal heroes Bailey and Craig replaced.
One of the substitutes, striker Sarah Walker hit the post with her first touch of the ball. The opportunity was created as a long free kick on the half way line by full back Alison Taberner launched into the penalty area. Sarah Walker smartly turned to hit the ball first time which clipped the outside of the post, going out for a goal kick.
Even though Preston were home and dry in this pre season match, manager Burgess was stressing to his side to keep their shape and not lose concentration.
But this wasn't the case as the Lilywhites gave away another sloppy goal which must have angered the North End management team. A Taberner throw in was not collected by centre back Vicky Charnley, as possession was nabbed by an American College forward who slammed the ball into the top right hand corner giving PNE stopper Reader no chance.
Preston soon regained their scoring boots as Sarah Walker made up for her earlier miss scoring her first of the match. Tammy Burgess won possession back in the middle of the park, with options on both wings, she decided against either to play the ball to the substitute striker who escaped the American defender. She fired a ferocious shot at the keeper, which was too hot to handle and could only parry the ball back to the feet of Preston's number nine, who didn't make the same mistake twice slamming the rebounded shot into the back of the net.
Willoughby made sure Preston got into double figures following an error from the visiting goalkeeper. A poor goal kick was played straight to the feet of midfielder Willoughby feet, who first time audaciously chipped the ball over the keeper in the 74th minute.
Full back Taberner, who was partly at fault for the visitors second goal, made up for her error by creating Preston's eleventh goal. Taberner, with a great tackle won the ball for PNE on the edge of the American's 16 yard box and played a cracking swerving cross in for Williougby to drive a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.
The rout was completed in the 85th minute, as another substitute Christina Skull got her name on the score sheet. Another Taberner set piece was causing the opposition problems, as her thunderous free kick could only be parried away. Willoughby, who was left unmarked in the penalty box, collected the loose ball to lay off Skull to side foot into the bottom right hand corner.
Manager Andy Burgess was delighted how his side reacted following their disappointment in the UCLan tournament. He said "I'm delighted, there has been a very good reaction following Sunday, we have changed the formation to 4-3-3 and it has suited us a whole lot better. It was a good work out and a lot of positives have come out of it."
