PNE WFC 1 Brighton And Hove Albion 0

Posted on: Mon 13 Oct 2008
PNE WFC could come up against one of the big guns after their deserved victory over Brighton put them in the last eight of the Premier League Cup.

Louise Cafferkey's header continued her excellent goalscoring record with the only goal of the game, giving new coach Anthony Chattell the perfect start to his reign at North End.

PNE WFC managed to hold out for the win despite having captain Sarah Berry sent off with fifteen minutes remaining.

The women started well and their domination of possession resulted in Cafferkey and Sam Cadwallader coming close with decent efforts on goal.

The good start continued into the fifteenth minute when Gemma Watson shot against the woodwork and Laura Walker came equally close five minutes later, firing against the post from a corner.

The deadlock was broken on the half-hour mark when the in-form Cafferkey nodded in Walker's corner at the back post.

The second half started in much the same way as the first, Gemma Watson again threatening with a shot that went inches over the bar.

Mel Martin

Mel Martin, Cafferkey and Walker all had chances to extend North End's lead but they were unable to capitalise on the good work from the team.

Brighton began to pose problems for PNE WFC as the game went on, having a goal disallowed for offside and seeing a shot hit the bar.

PNE WFC were forced to change to a more defensive formation following Sarah Berry's sending off but still looked for the goal to kill off the second round tie.

Substitute Hannah Bailey, who had replaced Cadwallader, looked to have done just that when she rounded the keeper but her shot went agonisingly over the bar.

The women managed to hold out for a hard-earned victory that sees them only two games from the final - they now face a long trip to the south coast to take on Portsmouth in the quarter finals, a game set to be played on Sunday 2nd November.

PNE: Jenny Horrocks, Anisha Bateman, Sarah Jones, Louise Belcher, Vikki Eastwood, Laura Walker, Mel Martin, Sarah Berry, Louise Cafferkey, Gemma Watson, Sam Cadwallader. Subs: Hannah Bailey, Alison Taberner, Sarah McCrea.

The reserves made it a doubly good weekend for PNE WFC with a 3-1 win at Liverpool. Danielle Ayers, Linny Craig and Mel Bartley scored the goals while goalkeeper Danielle Gibbons performed heroics to deny the Reds.
