PNE U18s 2 Blackpool U18s 1

Posted on: Mon 14 Dec 2009

Preston North End's youth team are back to winning ways after beating Blackpool's youth team 2-1 in the Lancashire derby.

Jamie Hoyland's side gained a two goal cushion in the first half thanks to goals from Ryan McGreevy and Daniel Devine. But North End played out the last ten minutes with ten men when centre back Devine was sent off for a second bookable offence after bringing down Blackpool striker Louis Almond. In what seemed a poor decision by the referee the visitors scored from the resulting free kick.

The goal was tapped in at the back post by Pamodou Jobe to make it a nervy end to the game for ten men North End. The young Lilywhites had dominated the match up until this point.

Preston's intentions were obvious from the start. After the first minute the ball broke to Jamie Proctor on the edge of the box who shot wide under pressure.

The pressure continued and PNE took the lead on the sixth minute after two great tackles from Scott Leather ended a Blackpool attack and set up a North End counter which resulted in a corner.

Neil Dougan whipped the corner to the front post but this was cleared by the defence for another corner. This time Dougan sent the corner to the far post where the ball was headed back across goal for McGreevy to tap in from close range to put his side 1-0 up.

The Tangerines looked to hit back straight away. From the re-start Blackpool winger Tom Barkindan broke down the right but his cross was blocked well for a corner.

PNE continued attacking and were looking for the second goal. They were passing the ball well; keeping possession and the midfield partnership of Scott Davidson and Captain Tom Owens were dominating the Blackpool midfield, creating chances for the forwards.

The final ball was the only thing stopping Preston from getting a second. On the 18th minute another corner was sent in by Dougan and Conor McLaughlin produced a great header which forced a save from the Blackpool keeper.

North End's keeper Dominic Comrie had very little to do in the first half as the Seasider's rarely attacked the PNE goal.

On the half hour mark McLaughlin once again had a chance, but this time just headed over the bar from a corner.

Dougan should have made it two but made the wrong decision for the final ball. After a great challenge by Seanan Clucas to win the ball back, he created a chance for Dougan who, instead of shooting, tried to square the ball to Proctor but the pass was behind the striker and the chance was wasted.

Preston made it 2-0 just before half time through another corner. Dougan's corner was forced in by Devine at the far post.

North End had much of the possession in the first half and created attack after attack but it was the final pass or shot that was missing to put them further ahead.

It was on the 52nd minute when Devine was booked for bringing down Almond after the Blackpool striker had turned the defender.

Preston were looking for a third with some great wing play. Dougan and McGreevy were causing problems down the flanks and creating chances. These chances were either blocked by defenders or easy saves for the Blackpool keeper Joseph Potts.

Davidson thought he had made it 3-0 after 58 minutes when Proctor laid the ball off at the edge of the area but Potts made a super save down to his right. Two minutes later Davidson was again set up by Proctor but this time his shot was easily saved by the keeper.

The chances kept coming when a dummy by Proctor created a chance for Dougan whose shot went wide of the post.

Then the referee made it a nervy final ten minutes for North End when Devine was given his marching orders for a second yellow, after once again bringing down striker Almond. The resulting free kick was poked in by Jobe to give the visitors a chance of stealing a point in a game where they really did not deserve one.

Despite being down to ten men the Lilywhites continued attacking and held onto possession making it hard for Blackpool to get hold of the ball.

North End held on to the lead and manager Hoyland was pleased with the result. He said: "We should have made it more comfortable but it's good to see that teams are respecting us and getting men behind the ball because they have seen we have started the season well."

In regards to the sending off Hoyland said: "The ref got it wrong, but there you go. I didn't agree with his decision at all."
