Preston North End Community and Education Trust’s Sporting Memories programme is now being delivered in-person at Deepdale again after a two-year period of online delivery, with the return coinciding with Dementia Action Week.
Sporting Memories is a registered charity which looks to support those living with dementia, depression and loneliness, and their carers, as well as those simply wishing to talk and reminisce about sport.
The session first began at Finney House Care Home in October 2019 before switching to Deepdale for a short period from January 2020 before the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic saw a switch to online delivery for the last two years.
Sporting Memories includes a variety of activities centred around reminiscence with quizzes, themed discussion and light physical activity forming part of a weekly session; every Tuesday from 11am until 12.30pm.
Participants wishing to get involved are welcomed to join the session at Deepdale by meeting at the South Executive Entrance off Lowthorpe Road prior to the start of the session.
Head of Health and Wellbeing Jessica Riley said: “We’re delighted to be bringing Sporting Memories back to Deepdale and reintroducing the vital element of face-to-face interaction to benefit those who access the programme.
“In an online capacity, our Sporting Memories programme has reached people from all over the United Kingdom. We acknowledge the great success that our Sporting Memories programme has had in the last two years and the great contribution that our enthusiastic volunteers have made towards that.
“We will now continue to deliver the programme in a hybrid format to allow those not within reach of Deepdale to remain involved within the session so that is accessible for all.”
During Dementia Action Week, the Alzheimer’s Society will also be present after the Sporting Memories session at Deepdale for a drop-in service from 12.45pm until 4pm, in the Health and Wellbeing Hub on Lowthorpe Road.
Dementia Advisers will be on-site to talk, share ideas, learn and gain information and provide advice about living with dementia.
