Newcastle United 6 PNE 0
The Irishman was adjudged to have elbowed Jack Colback in an aerial challenge and Rafa Benitez’s men went on to progress thanks to two goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic, two from Mo Diame, a Matt Ritchie penalty and one from substitute Ayoze Perez.
It was a much changed North End, with Simon Grayson only including Bailey Wright and Ben Pringle from the side that won at Norwich the previous weekend.
Mitrovic headed home the first from Matt Ritchie’s free kick before the 20 minute mark. Browne then saw red from referee Andy Madley on 25 minutes before Diame made it two seven minutes before the interval.
Ritchie then converted from the spot after being brought down himself in the box, before Mitrovic slid home after pulling into space at the back post. Diame added his second with three minutes to go firing right-footed into the bottom corner and in injury time Ayoze Perez fired home a rebound from a corner to complete the scoring.
The hosts started brightly and Isaac Hayden fired a shot against the post from the right hand edge of the penalty area.
And the opener came when Ritchie delivered a free kick from the left into the penalty area and it was headed into the bottom left hand corner by Mitrovic.
But matter became worse for the yellows when Browne sent off for a clash in the air with Jack Colback where his arm was pushed across the face of the Newcastle midfielder and although the former Sunderland man was only injured by a clash of heads with the Irishman, match official Madley decided the raised arm was enough for a straight red.
Just before the half hour mark Anders Lindegaard tipped a shot from the edge of the box by Christian Atsu around the post for a corner.
But on 38 minutes it was two when the Magpies counter attacked down the right, Mitrovic drove towards the box, his shot ricocheted into the path of Mo Diame who drove the ball into the bottom left hand corner from 20 yards out.
And it should have been three before the interval when Diame was clean through with an empty goal from Mitrovic’s pass, but somehow he blazed wide; all of this coming from a PNE back pass to send the striker clean through on goal.
Seven minutes into the second half and the home side were awarded a penalty when Matt Ritchie was adjudged to have been brought down and the Scottish international stepped up and fired the penalty right down the middle into the roof of the net to make it three.
Mitrovic then doubled his tally and made it four for the home side when he pulled off his marker at the back post, brought the ball down, dummied twice before drilling home from six yards out.
With four minutes to go an outstanding save from Matz Sels denied Paul Huntington a goal on his return to St James’ Park; Paul Gallagher delivering a second corner in succession and the defender, captaining the side until the introduction of Tom Clarke in the second half, header down towards the bottom right hand corner only for the keeper to make a fine diving stop.
It was respite for the yellows, but not for long as Diame added his second with three minutes to go, making a swift counter attack and drilling a right-footed effort into the bottom right hand corner of Anders Lindegaard’s goal and in injury time substitute Ayoze Perez slotted home from just inside the penalty area after a corner wasn’t fully cleared.
