Preston North End vs Norwich City Match Preview

21 August 2018

North End’s first midweek league fixture of the season is perhaps their longest trip of the season, as they head to Norfolk, to face Norwich City at Carrow Road.

17 September 2018

We hope you can get down and support the lads, but this is also the first time you can watch the game live on iFollow PNE for a league game, with four camera coverage and commentary from Jonathan Breeze and Brett Ormerod.

It’s a game that pits North End boss Alex Neil against his former employers, with the Lilywhites looking to build on Saturday’s positive performance in front of the TV cameras against promotion favourites Stoke City at the weekend.

Last season the two sides shared the points in both games, a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road, with Tom Barkhuizen and James Maddison’s free kick sharing the spoils and then a goalless draw up at Deepdale towards the end of the season.

This time around, both teams will want to try and take all three points from this early season encounter, knowing that at this point of the campaign a win can thrust you a number of places up the table

Match Reports

Norwich City 2 Preston North End 0

22 August 2018

Goals from Teemu Pukki and Alex Tettey gave Norwich City the points at Carrow Road.

Pukki fired in off the right hand post with ten minutes to go and then Tettey volleyed home a corner that had been headed away to seal the win for Daniel Farke’s men with three minutes left.

Manager Alex Neil made three changes to the side that had faced Stoke City the previous weekend, also changing his formation, going 4-4-2 with Lukas Nmecha partnering Louis Moult in attack.

Before the game the PNE boss had mentioned that the Canaries were top of the passing stats for the Championship and they certainly had plenty of possession in the first half, without testing Declan Rudd.

If fact the best of the opportunities were certainly the Lilywhites. As early as the fourth minute Tom Barkhuizen saw a shot blocked by Ivo Pinto at close range after great build up play with Callum Robinson sending Andrew Hughes in behind the Norwich right back and the defender pulling the ball across goal.

At the 26-minute mark there was a great chance for an opener, Nmecha broke down the left into the box, drilled a shot goalwards bringing a great save from Tim Krul, the ball coming out to Darnell Fisher who smashed a shot powerfully, but over the bar from 18 yards.

The away side started the second half brightly and Moult got up at the back post four minutes into the latter period to get his head on Robinson’s scooped left-wing cross, but Krul made a fine point-blank save to deny the striker the opener.

With 18 minutes to go Robinson almost broke the deadlock with a stunning run from his own half, beating three Norwich City men, leaving them in his wake before rocketing a left-footed effort past Krul, but off the underside of the cross bar, down and away to safety – it would have been a stunning goal from the No.7.

But with ten minutes to go the home side took the lead. Jamal Lewis picked up the ball on the right, feeding it out to Pukki, who took the ball into the left side of the box and drilled a low shot past Declan Rudd off the inside of the right hand upright and into the back of the net, their first shot on target all game.

And the game was tied up with three minutes to go as a corner from the home side was delivered from the left, headed out by Paul Huntington, but only to Tettey who volleyed the ball back into the bottom right hand corner from 25 yards.

Norwich City line-up: Krul, Pinto (Zimmermann, 75), Marshall (Buendia, 66), Leitner (Trybull, 90), Rhodes, Lewis, Klose, Pukki, Hernandez, Tettey, Hanley (c). Subs not used: McGovern, Godfrey, Srbeny, Thompson.

PNE line-up: Rudd, Fisher, Hughes, Pearson, Clarke (c), Huntington, Barkhuizen (Barker, 79), Browne (Harrop, 90), Moult (Johnson, 70), Nmecha, Robinson. Subs not used: Maxwell, Davies, Ledson, Burke.

Attendance: 24,936 (320 PNE fans)

Referee: Mr G Ward
