Match Report: PNE 1 Luton Town 1

15 February 2023

Troy Parrott’s first goal at Deepdale earned ten-man Preston North End a point against Luton Town.

The visitors created the better of the chances in the first half, with Elijah Adebayo and Jordan Clark coming close, before Ben Whiteman was shown a straight red card five minutes into the second period.

Carlton Morris then gave his side the lead in the 73rd minute, but Tottenham Hotspur loanee Parrott scored from the spot nine minutes from time to secure a point.

Parrott was one of five changes made by Ryan Lowe from the weekend’s defeat to Burnley, with Álvaro Fernández, Brad Potts, Greg Cunningham and Whiteman also coming in to the starting line-up.

It was a first half short of action in its early stages, with the first real threat of danger from PNE coming in the 13th minute, when Parrott sent a promising cross into the area, but goalkeeper Ethan Horvath dealt with the ball in.

The Lilywhites had to defend at the other end when Jordan Clark had a couple of great opportunities within the same attack, with the midfielder seeing his first effort blocked by Ali McCann, while his rebound was then flicked over the bar by the head of Álvaro Fernández.

A huge chance then fell the way of Adebayo after the half-hour mark when the striker chested the ball down well from a cross-field pass, before sending a 12-yard effort wide with only Freddie Woodman to beat.

Bell potentially had an even better opportunity to break the deadlock five minutes before the break after being found in the area by Fred Onyedinma, but he sent his first-time strike inches past the post.

While the Hatters didn’t have an advantage in terms of the scoreline, they were handed the numerical edge in the 50th minute, with Whiteman being shown a straight red card for a challenge on Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu.

Just four minutes later, the visitors could and probably should have taken the lead as Adebayo was sent through on goal, but again he curled his shot wide, much to the forward’s disbelief.

PNE had a chance of their own in the 65th minute as Parrott showed good feet to beat his man, but he could only find the side netting, while – just two minutes later – Woodman had his crossbar to thank for keeping Morris’ front-post header out.

He wasn’t as fortunate on 73 minutes, though, as Morris headed home from just a few yards out on the end of Bell’s cross from the left.

However, they weren’t ahead for long, as referee Josh Smith pointed to the spot when Parrott’s cross was handled by Tom Lockyer, and Parrott stepped up to smash home from the spot for his first goal on home soil.

North End then almost went ahead just seconds after the restart when Cannon was sent through on goal, but he fired a low effort narrowly wide.

Woodman had to make saves to deny both Clark and Cauley Woodrow in added-time and in turn ensured PNE registered a point.

PNE line-up: Woodman; Storey, Cunningham, Hughes; Potts (Woodburn, 72), Whiteman, Browne, McCann, Fernández; Parrott, Cannon (Delap, 89). Subs not used: Cornell, Lindsay, Johnson, Brady, Ledson.
