Match Preview: Hearts (H)

19 July 2022

Preston North End will play at Deepdale for the first time in over two months when Heart of Midlothian come to Lancashire on Wednesday evening.

The friendly against Robbie Neilson’s side, which kicks off at 7.45pm, marks the fifth match of PNE’s pre-season schedule, with only a game against Leicester City still to come.

North End will play in the new 2022/23 home kit for the first time on Wednesday night, and those wishing to buy the kit in adult sizes will be able to do so from the club shop up until kick-off! The kit can also be pre-ordered in junior sizes here.

Supporter Information

Tickets for the game will also be on sale right up until kick-off, with supporters able to buy in person from the ticket office, over the phone on 0344 856 1966 and online at www.mypne.com. Ticket prices are discounted for Ambassadors.

Please note, the ticket office will stop selling for the Wigan Athletic away match at 5pm both in person and over the phone, but sales will continue online overnight.

The fan zone will be open to home supporters from 5pm, with non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, food and live music all available. The fan zone will reopen after the game, with last orders at 10pm.

Matchday Programme

Former Hearts player Ben Woodburn is the man on the cover of our 32-page matchday programme, which includes content for both Wednesday night’s game and the Leicester City friendly.

Ben talks about his loan with the Jam Tarts last season and his short time so far as a PNE man, while we have extensive coverage of both opponents to Deepdale this week.

The One And Only will be available from around the ground for £2, or you can buy online here.

PNE Team News

This fixture could be the first chance for North End supporters to see the four summer signings in action at Deepdale.

Given his links to Hearts, Ben Woodburn will be a man keen to make an appearance, while the likes of Dai Cornell, Freddie Woodman and Robbie Brady could also feature.

One man definitely ruled out is striker Sean Maguire, with the Irishman expected to miss the next six weeks due to an Achilles injury.

The Opposition

In Hearts, North End are facing a side who finished third in the Scottish Premiership during the 2021/22 season, meaning they have secured their place in European competition for the upcoming campaign.

They are still awaiting to find out who their opponents will be in next month’s two-legged Europa League Play-Off. A win would see them reach the group stages of the competition, while defeat would mean a drop down to the Conference League.

Hearts have faced two English sides in the past week, defeating Tranmere Rovers last Wednesday before being pegged back to 2-2 against Crawley Town, after going 2-0 up.

Match Report: PNE 2 Hearts 1

20 July 2022

Goals from Ben Woodburn and Alan Browne either side of Peter Haring’s penalty earned Preston North End a 2-1 victory over Hearts at Deepdale.

Woodburn, who spent the 2021/22 season with the Scottish side, opened the scoring on 34 minutes with a tidy first-time finish into the bottom corner.

North End were pegged back from the spot in the second half by Haring, before skipper Browne scored the winner 15 minutes from time.

Woodburn was the man with the first chance of the game, intercepting a loose ball out of defence before looking to shoot, but Alex Cochrane made up for his error with a last-ditch challenge.

After a lull in goalmouth action, Ched Evans almost opened the scoring in style with a great strike from distance, however a slight deflection took it just wide.

The visitors’ first opportunity came shortly after the half-hour mark, with a brilliant Barrie McKay cross finding Liam Boyce inside the six-yard box, and the striker saw his effort well kept out at close range by goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

Just a minute later, North End had the lead, as Evans chose to dummy Brad Potts’ cross from the right, and Woodburn was there behind him to expertly slot home with a first-time finish.

The 22-year-old nearly had his second in the early stages of the second half as Emil Riis sent him into the area, but the midfielder put his effort just wide of goal.

Ali McCann and Liam Lindsay both had chances to make it two after that, but it was the visitors next on the scoresheet. Toby Sibbick’s run out of defence ended with the ball being played into Boyce, who was brought down by Hughes inside the area, and Haring stepped up to slot home from 12 yards.

PNE had the lead again on 76 minutes through substitute and captain Browne. He was found after more good work from Woodburn and the No.8 did well to cut inside onto his left foot and find the back of the net, despite a touch from Craig Gordon.

Stephen Kingsley was inches away from scoring a spectacular equaliser in the game’s final stages, but it was North End who took victory.

PNE line-up: Woodman; Storey (Diaby, 69), Lindsay (Cunningham, 78), Hughes (Bauer, 78); Potts, Whiteman (Amaral, 88), McCann (Browne, 69), Woodburn (O’Neill, 86), Brady (Johnson, 45); Riis, Evans (Ledson, 75). Subs not used: Cornell, Coulton.
