Who’s Available?

After missing the Norwich City match through illness, Calvin Ramsay’s health will need to be assessed ahead of Tuesday.

Milutin Osmajić will also be monitored, with his return from injury expected either at the John Smith's Stadium or for the weekend’s visit of Watford.

Long-term absentee Emil Riis may also be in contention for that game at Deepdale against the Hornets.

Opposition Focus

Huddersfield Town, who occupy 21st position in the Championship – two points above the drop zone – head into Tuesday night unbeaten in their last four.

The vastly-experienced Neil Warnock left the club in September and former Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore took over, tasked with moving the Terriers up the table.

They’ve picked up some positive results in recent weeks, most notably a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, but the manager was left disappointed at the weekend that his side let a lead slip to draw at home to Bristol City.

A Recent Clash

North End ran riot at the John Smith’s Stadium last August in round one of the Carabao Cup.

Match Report: Huddersfield Town 1 PNE 3

12 December 2023

Alan Browne, Will Keane and Ben Whiteman were all on the scoresheet as Preston North End got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory against Huddersfield Town.

Skipper Browne put his side ahead three minutes in with a superb header from just inside the penalty area, before Keane capped off a brilliant half by doubling the lead.

Danny Ward got one back for the hosts early in the second half, but a guided finish from Whiteman in the 67th minute restored the two-goal lead and ultimately secured the three points.

North End were on the front foot right from the off in West Yorkshire and might have gone ahead inside two minutes when the ball fell to Browne, but the skipper volleyed wide from close range.

He then had a penalty claim waved away a minute later, but it wasn’t to matter as he soon found the back of the net. Former Terrier Duane Holmes crossed in towards the midfielder who beautifully guided a 15-yard header beyond Chris Maxwell to give the visitors a lead.

PNE were appealing for a penalty once again ten minutes in as Ched Evans appeared to be tripped in the area by Tom Lees, however John Busby again awarded nothing.

After Browne was narrowly denied a second by a deflection, Ben Whiteman came up with a hugely important tackle at the other end to prevent Josh Koroma levelling against the run of play after breaking away.

Liam Millar – who was causing all sorts of problems down the left – showed incredible skill in the 39th minute to beat his man and carry the ball before playing it through for Keane with the outside of his right boot, and the Irishman hit it first time to slot under Maxwell and find the far corner.

The hosts made a triple change at the break which spurred them into life and, after a nodding tamely into hands of Freddie Woodman a few minutes earlier, Ward beat the goalkeeper in the 55th minute to pull one back.

Huddersfield then had a lively period without really testing the PNE backline, but Ryan Lowe’s side took control of the tie again midway through the half as Whiteman restored the two-goal advantage.

Holmes laid the ball off for the midfielder who took a touch before expertly guiding the ball into the bottom right-hand corner to make it three.

From that point, North End looked comfortable and saw out the victory well to get back to winning ways.

Huddersfield Town starting XI: Maxwell; Pearson (Edmonds-Green, 65), Helik, Lees (Nakayama, 46); Thomas, Kasumu, Hogg, Austerfield (Wiles, 46), Koroma (Headley, 46); Ward (Diarra, 61), Burgzorg. Subs not used: Nicholls, Edwards, Ayina, Iorpenda.

PNE starting XI: Woodman; Storey, Whatmough, Lindsay (Brady, 84); Potts, Whiteman, Holmes (Frøkjær, 74), Browne (Woodburn, 84), Millar (Hughes, 67); Keane (McCann, 67), Evans. Subs not used: Cornell, Cunningham, Ledson, Best.
