Beardo: We Haven’t Done Enough

13 February 2013

Striker Chris Beardsley says the players must take a long hard look at themselves after losing the lead at Yeovil.

The North End No.20, playing through the pain barrier with a broken foot, spoke to PNE.Com after the 3-1 loss at Huish Park and felt that the team had done everything right until the last 20 minutes.

“We were one-nil up at half-time and kept their chances to a minimum,” he said. “In the second half they scored three goals and we pretty much gift wrapped it to them.”

“It’s a concentration thing, when you’re playing a game you have to concentrate.

“One straight ball for the first goal, at the second we defended the set piece wrong, like an U13 side to be honest.

“When the ball comes in to your box the first thing you do is head it high with distance, we have headed it straight down in the penalty box and the way it is going for us at the minute its fell for one of their lads to poke into the net.

“Whether he is offside I don’t know, but it’s embarrassing for a League One side to defend like that.

“Defenders get paid to keep the ball out the net and as a team we haven’t done it.

“We were all back their defending that set play and it’s got to be better.

“The third one we are chasing the game and to be fair it’s an outstanding finish, but overall with 20 minutes to go this is where you earn the three points and keep a clean sheet and we haven’t done it.”

The Derby-born hitman says the lads must now examine what is wrong and react in a positive manner: “The players need to take a long hard look at themselves.

“We got beat by Colchester one-nil at the weekend and we have come here and gone ahead and we haven’t done enough, neither to hold onto it or go and get the second goal.

“Sometimes you have got to go away from home and get results. The best sides in the country do it and we have got to learn quickly.”

His third goal of the season was little solace for Beardo and was disappointed not to add a second in the opening 15 minutes of the second period.

“It was great to get the goal, I think if the header beats them for the second goal we see it out as a two goal cushion kills them off. It wasn’t to be.

“I’m disappointed those are the only two chances in the 90 minutes I caused and it was good to get out there, but I came to this football club to win games and we are not doing it.”

He finished by praising the travelling support: “It is unbelievable to be honest. It is not nice for them. They have had two long away trips and seen us not pick up any points. They were brilliant again tonight.

“We know how much it costs to get here and we travelled down yesterday so it’s a monumental effort from them to get here for the game tonight and it doesn’t go unnoticed by the lads.”
