Eyres Earns All-time Left Winger Spot

15 July 2013

David Eyres has won the battle to be crowned PNE’s all-time greatest left winger, after a late surge of votes for the scouser ensured his place in the Fans’ XI.

The ex-North End, Blackpool and Burnley midfielder fended off former USA international Eddie Lewis’ challenge to secure 60% of the ballot on his way to victory.

The 49-year-old, who bagged a brace against the Seasiders in the Lilywhites recent Legends’ game, now lines up alongside the likes of Alan Kelly Snr, Graham Alexander, Ryan Kidd, Mark Lawrenson, Joe Marston and Sir Tom Finney in the select Preston side.

Eyres spent three years at Deepdale, making 133 appearances and scoring 27 goals on his way to becoming a firm fans’ favourite.

Below are the results of the ‘Fans’ All-time XI’ left winger poll as voted for over the past seven days:

David Eyres         60%
Eddie Lewis          19%
Peter Thompson    5%
Other                  16%

This week, we go in search of a pair of central midfielders to complete the All-time XI quartet and, as always, it’s up to you, the fans, to decide who will receive the honour.

So, will Sean Gregan secure one of the most important positions in the team? The former skipper moved to Preston in 1996 and stayed at Deepdale for six years – establishing himself at the heart of that successful late-90s side.

Or will Bobby Charlton get your vote instead? The Manchester United and England legend made 38 appearances for North End in his lone season as player-manager.

Howard Kendall is also in with a shout. The ex-England international made history in becoming the youngest ever player to appear in an FA Cup final - at just 17 - as PNE lost three-two to West Ham United in 1964.

All-action midfielder Nobby Lawton will surely command a large portion of votes. A teammate of Kendall’s, he made 164 league and cup appearances for Preston before eventually leaving Deepdale to join Brighton & Hove Albion.

Brian Mooney is another potential candidate. The former Republic of Ireland international played over 125 games for PNE in a four year stint at the Club, and became a favourite of the Lilywhites supporters.

However, none of the above are guaranteed a place in PNE’s ‘Fans’ All-time XI’ without your vote!

So, to register your selection, simply reply to the post on Facebook, or alternatively on Twitter name your selection followed by the ‘hashtag’ of #PNEXI.

You can also email your vote to media@pne.com.
