‘Good Game For The Neutral’

19 November 2013

Joel Byrom spoke to PNE.Com after the Lilywhites bowed out of the Lancashire Senior Cup in a nine-goal thriller against Wigan Athletic.

The midfielder scored one excellent goal and was denied another by the cross bar, but the Lilywhites lost 5-4 against the Latics at their Christopher Park training ground on Tuesday afternoon.

Byrom spoke to the official website and admitted there was a lot of disappointment in the dressing room: “It would have been a nice game for the neutral, but we’ve come away from home and scored four goals, but not won the game, so it has not been great for us,” he said.

“We didn’t start well; but the back four was a very young back four, as was the goalkeeper and there was a little bit of nerves; but they grew into the game.

“Killa (Neil Kilkenny), Josh Brownhill and I like playing together and there was quite a bit of rotation in there and we managed to get back into the game.

“We got ourselves level and then we got ourselves in front in the second half; but we couldn’t hold on to it.

“When you get into that position where you are in the lead, you want to keep hold of it, but we gave it away too easy and that is not a nice way to lose a game.”

It was Byrom’s first start since the middle of October and whilst he admitted needing to blow the cobwebs out, felt it was a useful run out.

“It was good to get 90 minutes,” he continued. “It has been a few weeks since I played some football. I felt a little bit rusty, but it was good to get the minutes.

“It is nice to score and Josh also did ever so well and got two more and we all have to keep playing and keep doing the best we can to push those who are playing for places.”
