PNEWFC 17-2 Penwortham

22 October 2013

PNE Women put in a dominant performance to beat Penwortham 17-2 in the County Cup and progress to the next round.

The game could have had a bad start though but Laura Walker cleared off the line in the first minute.

Sophie Jones scored a ten minute hat trick early on and Gemma Watson, returning after an ankle injury, added a goal after rounding Naomi Cavell in the Penwortham goal.

Paige Forster added a goal in the 20th minute to make it 5-0 before Watson added her second with a lovely finish to make it 6-0.

Harriet Coles, making her debut for PNE Women, then had to produce a good save to keep her clean sheet intact.

Straight after that save, PNE counter attacked and less than a minute later had their seventh goal of the day with Tiff Robinson getting the goal.

The half-time whistle went and Penwortham would have been glad to get into the break and reshape but the goals didn’t stop there as a further ten flew in.

Two minutes after the restart and Forster had her second as her deflected effort wrong footed Cavell.

As torrential rain fell at the Sports Arena, Penwortham grabbed a goal as Hannah Taylor headed in at the back post.

Watson then scored two goals in two minutes to extend the lead and then Robinson added her second of the game to make the score 11-1.

Walker then scored with a screamer from 30 yards that flew into the top corner before Taylor added her second, and Penwortham’s second of the game with a tap in to make 12-2.

Holly Rawcliffe, another debutant for PNE, added her name to the list of goal scorers in the 70th minute.

Forster completed her hat trick four minutes later with a magnificent solo effort before Melissa Ball scored to make it 15-2.

Ball then got her second goal of the game as her chipped effort from the edge of the area sailed over the Penwortham goalkeeper.

Sophie Killip then completed the scoring to make it 17-2 when she tapped in at the back post.

PNE are now into the third round of the County Cup with a result which should provide a confidence boost ahead of the game against Leeds on the 27th October.

PNE: Coles, Charlesworth (Ball 53), Wooton, Walker (c), Stanfield, Jones, Foster, Killip, Robinson (Rawcliffe 59), Forster, Watson (McGrath 71).
