Champions League Betting Preview

17 September 2013

For the first time in four months, Champions League football will grace our television screens tonight and, as usual, Sky Bet has all the best odds.

Former PNE boss David Moyes will take charge of his very first game in the European Cup group stages.

His Manchester United side, fresh from their 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday, will host Bayer Levekusen at Old Trafford with the hope they can get their Champions League campaign off to a flier.

United are 4/5 favourites to beat the German outfit, while the away side are 4/1 to cause an upset at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

Leverkusen have made a blistering start to their respective league campaign and currently sit third in the Bundesliga table with 12 points from their opening five games.

Robin van Persie is 100/30 to get the scoring underway at Old Trafford, while hot-shot German forward Stefan Kiessling, who has over 100 Bayer goals to his name, is 7/1 to bag the opener.

The Blue side of Manchester will be focussed on Manuel Pellegrini’s first game in charge of City in Europe as the Sky Blues prepare to do battle with Czech minnows Plzen.

City are 4/5 favourites to start their Champions League campaign with a win, and Spanish international Alvaro Negredo is 9/2 to get the first goal at the Doosan Arena.

Elsewhere, current holders Bayern Munich host CSKA Moscow at the Allianz Arena, and are 2/11 to beat their Russian counterparts in Germany. CSKA are 12/1 to cause an upset, while a draw with Sky Bet is currently 11/2.

On Wednesday night, Arsenal face a tough trip to France to face Marseille, following that precious win over Sunderland at the weekend.

The Gunners are 11/8 to return from Stade Velodrome with three points, while the hosts are 2/1 to over-power Arsene Wenger’s side.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will take on FC Basel, who knocked Tottenham out of the Europe League on penalties last season.

Jose Mourinho will hope his side can bounce back from their defeat to Everton at Goodison Park at the weekend, and Sky Bet have odds of 30/100 for them to do just that. Basel are 8/1 underdogs and a draw is 9/2 with the bookies.
