Looking at: Fleetwood Town

9 July 2014

Next up, it’s the turn of neighbours Fleetwood Town in Preston North End’s ‘looking at’ series.

Founded: 1908
Nickname: The Cod Army
Stadium: Highbury
Manager: Graham Alexander
Last season: 4th in League Two (promoted via the Play-Offs)

Fleetwood’s elevated rise up the football leagues continued last season, with the club attaining their sixth promotion in 10 years.

The Cod Army secured promotion to League One via the Play-Offs after narrowly missing out on automatic promotion during the domestic campaign.

A Play-Off semi-final win against York City was rounded off with a victory at Wembley against Burton Albion in the final to ensure Fleetwood would be playing in League One for the first time this season.

Town's back room staff has been dominated by ex PNE players over the last few years - starting with the manager Graham Alexander, Chris Lucketti the assistant, the goalkeeping coach David Lucas, and the fitness coach Youl Mawene who all featured in Lilywhite colours at some point during their playing careers.

The match-up between North End and Fleetwood in October will be the first time the sides have met competitively, and with just 22 miles separating the pair, the trip to the Fylde coast on the 28th March will be the shortest trip North End fans have to make in the league this season.

In preparation for life in the third tier, the Cod Army have bolstered their squad making three signings so far, acquiring the services of Keith Southern and Danny Andrew from Huddersfield and Macclesfield respectively as well as former North Ender Jamie Proctor from Crawley.

Staying put at Fleetwood it seems is long serving midfielder Nathan Pond, who'll be going into his 11th year at Fleetwood this season, and will be targeting to add to his impressive 313 appearances for Town.
