Looking At: Sheffield United

25 June 2014

PNE.Com is taking an in-depth look at each of Preston North End’s opponents for the 2014/15 Sky Bet League One season with today’s focus being on Sheffield United.

Founded: 1889
Nickname: The Blades
Stadium: Bramall Lane
Manager: Nigel Clough
Last Season: 7th in League One

The 2013/14 season started uncharacteristically badly for Sheffield United as they suffered eight loses in their first 11 games.

The Blades’ poor form led to the club and former manager David Weir parting ways in October, with Nigel Clough being appointed as his replacement.

Under their new head coach, United turned their fortunes around and a run of seven consecutive victories between February and March led many to believe they could make a late surge for a Play-Off place.

However, the Bramall Lane outfit just missed out and were forced to settle for seventh.

They did, however, make a deep run in the FA Cup, beating Aston Villa, Fulham and Nottingham Forest on their way to the semi final, where they lost 5-3 to Hull City at Wembley.

Nigel Clough’s side are one of the favourites for promotion next season. They start their 2014/15 campaign at home to Bristol City and make a trip to Deepdale at the end of August.
