Looking At: Walsall

27 June 2014

PNE.Com is taking an in-depth look at each of Preston North End’s opponents for the 2014/15 Sky Bet League One season with today’s focus being on Walsall.

Founded: 1888
Nickname: The Saddlers
Stadium: Banks’s Stadium
Manager: Dean Smith
Last Season: 13th in League One

Walsall began the summer by releasing eight players, including their top scorer from the 2013/14 season - Craig Westcarr.

Troy Hewitt, Nicky Featherstone and James McQuilkin were also part of the clear out.

Westcarr signed for the Saddlers just last year and bagged 16 goals as Dean Smith’s side finished mid-table last term.

A trip to Banks’s Stadium ended in Preston’s first victory of their 2013/14 league campaign as Joel Byrom, Chris Humphrey and Lee Holmes scored in an emphatic 3-0 win.

The return fixture at Deepdale was played in March and also resulted in three points for the Lilywhites. A Paul Downing own goal and Bailey Wright’s header earned North End the victory.

Walsall will open the 2014/15 season away to Port Vale and will face Preston North End for the first time in September at Banks’s Stadium.

The Saddlers will make the trip to Deepdale in January.
