Brys Sees Similarities To '96

14 March 2014

Former Preston and Sheffield United midfielder Ian Bryson says he can see similarities between the North End side he captained to promotion in 1996 and the current crop of Lilywhites.

Bryson led Preston to the third division title in his third year at the Club as North End amassed a total of 86 points and a staggering plus 40 goal difference.

And the retired midfielder believes, with the growing understanding between Joe Garner and Craig Davies in attack, Simon Grayson’s side can emulate that success this season.

“We were a good side at the time, we scored a lot of goals, we got over 100 goals that season, we scored goals from all over,” Bryson told The One And Only in an exclusive interview.

“We had a couple of good strikers, Andy Saville and Steve Wilkinson, who had a good partnership up-front and I can see Garner and Davies are forming that sort of partnership.

“So there are a lot of similarities and hopefully they can get the same kind of results at the end of the season.

“I hope they can [get promotion]; they’ve got the quality in the squad, they’ve put themselves in a good position.

“I’d like them to get up automatically because Preston have struggled in the Play-Offs in the past but,  but I think Simon’s done a great job, he’s a manager that’s done it before so he knows what it’s all about.

“If he can install that great confidence into his side I think they’ll have a great chance.”
