John Welsh Pleased With ‘Good Performance’

7 October 2014

Preston North End midfielder John Welsh was more than happy with the Lilywhites’ overall display in Tuesday’s 3-2 victory over Port Vale in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Preston looked comfortable in the first half and went in front through Chris Humphrey’s second goal in as many appearances at Deepdale.

But Port Vale bounced back after the break through Tom Pope, then up-stepped Joe Garner for the most nonchalant of chips to restore PNE’s lead before Paul Gallagher made it three.

And despite Pope’s second of the contest in the dying embers of the match, North End saw out the game to book a well-deserved place in the northern section last eight.

“The gaffer said before [the match] to keep the ball better and I thought we done that really well,” said Welsh, following the conclusion of the contest.

“We got in front and then we conceded a goal, but the lads, they kept working well, and Joe [Garner] scored a wonder goal and Gally [Paul Gallagher] has got himself a goal so a good performance overall.

“Towards the end we conceded the late goal so it was a bit of backs against the wall and defend, but overall it was a good performance by us.”
