Grayson's Xl Dominate 'Deepdale Legends' Match

30 April 2015

North End manager Simon Grayson led his side to an emphatic 8-1 victory in the Deepdale Legends charity match in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

Leading a team of former players and TV personalities, the gaffer and ex pros showed their class with a dominating performance at Deepdale.

The select Xl were out of sight by half time with a seven goal advantage over the Fans Xl.

The PNE boss, acting as player-manager on the night, opened the scoring on four minutes with a stunning solo effort that saw his side 1-0 up.

Eight minutes later, Dean Windass was brought down in the box by Craig Cowley and the referee pointed to the spot. Mark Lawrenson stepped up in front of the Alan Kelly Town End and his strike went in off the inside of the post to make it 2-0 .

Dean Windass made it 3-0 after 16 minutes as he got on the end of an inch-perfect cross from 'Fenners' to bullet home.

Soon after, Barry Nicholson gave Grayson's side a four goal advantage before Paul McKenna scored his first of the game to make it 5-0 just four minutes later.

It was McKenna again just before the interval to make it 6-0, before Jon Macken got the seventh on the stroke of half-time.

After a stern team-talk from managers Kevin Davies, Tom Clarke and Joe Garner, the Fans Xl came out stronger and got a goal back in the opening five minutes of the second-half.

A free-kick was awarded to the home side and Danny Garratt stepped up to get one back for the Fans team, though 'keeper David Lucas will feel he should have done better with the shot.

From then on it was a fairly even encounter in the second period, with the select Xl with a comfortable lead.

North End first team coach John Dreyer finished the scoring on the 83rd minute after beating two men from the edge of the box before chipping it over the 'keeper to make it 8-1.

Despite the one-sided scoreline, it was an enjoyable evening for all involved and more importantly, the game helped raise a fantastic amount of money for Prostate Cancer UK.

There's still time to donate towards the gaffer's charity efforts by going to www.justgiving.co.uk/Simon-Grayson2015 to support him on his bike ride this summer from London to Amsterdam.

The North End manager was grateful to everyone involved with the evening and thanked everyone for their support. You can hear what he had to say by watching the video below.
