Jamie Jones And Steve Thompson On Pre-Season Opener

11 July 2015

Goalkeeper Jamie Jones and first-team coach Steve Thompson offer their views on PNE’s first pre-season game.

Preston North End got their pre-season schedule underway with a 0-0 draw to Chorley in the annual Jack Kirkland Cup this afternoon.

The Lilywhites had more than enough chances throughout to put the game to bed, including a missed penalty by Joe Garner mid-way through the second-half, but the Magpies held on to record a draw.

But the priority for Simon Grayson’s side this afternoon was match practice, and these sentiments were echoed by Jones after the final whistle.

“We should have won it with the penalty miss but we’re not here for that, we’re here to get fit,” said the shot-stopper.

“We played a high pressing game to get that fitness in and we’ve done that and got the work in which is the main part.

“We’re keeping ourselves nice and fit and ready to come back with the hard work – he’s [Grayson] got every player to select from and that’s a credit to ourselves and the physio as well.

“I want to get out there and do as well as I can and give the gaffer a decision to make come the start of the season.”

Also speaking to PNE Player this afternoon was new first-team coach Steve Thompson who was also pleased with North End’s run out.

“It’s important we get the legs up to speed for the games – it’s been a good shift. Chorley have been a good test for us.

“It’s still early doors and there’s still plenty of things to work on, but we’ll have a look at the stats and see where we’re up to with the fitness levels.

“We’ve got a game coming up against Bamber Bridge and a full week where we can get the lads up to speed – we’ve shown signs of what we’re capable of, we just need to build on it.”
