Manager Delighted With Pickford Signing

31 July 2015

Manager Simon Grayson was delighted with the addition of young goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to his squad.

Pickford signed a season-long loan deal on Friday and has been allocated the No.1 shirt for the season.

The gaffer feels he will be a great addition to the squad, and admits he is a player he has kept an eye on for some time.

"As soon as we got wind that Jordan was available then we decided to sign him.

"We knew we needed to make the decision very quickly because he's a good, young, up and coming goalkeeper who has some good experience, he did very well at Bradford City last year and we feel he is going to fit well into the squad and have a really good season with us."

"I think they could have quite easily kept him around the first team and have him competing for the No.1 and No.2 shirts but they felt it was a good opportunity for him to go out on loan and get some games and play on a regular basis in the Championship.

"That's a benefit to us, he is very highly thought of at a big Premiership club and I am looking forward to working with him.

"We got the phonecall in the last 24 hours and saw that he was available and we think a lot about him, hence why we've moved so quickly so it's great to have him on board.

The 21-year-old spent time away with the England U20 squad, before returning to training with the Sunderland first team and the gaffer feels this will only benefit him ahead of the new season.

"We've been talking to him today and he was pleased with how the tournament went he's been training with Sunderland's first team all the time and went to America with them and so it's great experience for him

"Coming out on loan to us in the Championship is going to further that experience but it's also going to help us along the way.

"He's a 'keeper  that we've been made aware of over the last couple of years and we've been keeping an eye on things and he's impressed us. Once we got the nod that he was available we made that decision that we couldn't afford to hang on much longer for Sam Johnstone and we are delighted that Jordan has chosen us over a few other Clubs."
