Preston 7/6
Fulham 13/5
Draw 23/10

From the the narrow 1-0 opening day reverse at Reading, to the joy of a 94th minute cup winner over Hartlepool United – it’s been quite a first week of the new season for North End.

Saturday’s opponents Fulham, 9/1 shots for promotion, did their chances of a good finish come May no harm at all with a 1-0 win over hot title favourites Newcastle United, and then followed up in the cup with a 3-2 victory at Leyton Orient.

The Lilywhites lost this fixture last season 2-1, with strikes from 23-goal man Ross McCormack and the talented Moussa Dembele, but with both dangermen having moved on to pastures new, the Londoners’ goal threat will come from a different source.

They played a largely containing game against Newcastle, and we can expect more of the same again, so expect a tight affair.

A goal or less in the match at 2/1 looks like a very solid selection, and with the atmosphere at Deepdale set to be pumping from the get-go, the home side winning at both half-time and full-time is a tempting 5/2 chance.

Returning forward Eoin Doyle bagged the winner in midweek and is 5/1 to net the opener here, with Jermaine Beckford a 22/5 chance and Joe Garner 23/5, while the visitors’ Sone Aluko can be backed in the same market at 13/2, with Cauley Woodrow and Matt Smith 7/1 apiece.

Prediction: 1-0 6/1
Bet of the day: PNE to win without conceding 12/5
Outside punt: Tom Clarke to score in a PNE win 30/1
