Welshy On 'A Great Workout'

3 August 2016

North End midielder John Welsh was pleased with PNE's final workout of the season against Lancaster City.

Welsh played almost 80 minutes on the night as he and the other senior pros looked to get additional minutes under their belts ahead of the big kick-off this weekend.

With pre-season out of the way, the focus turns to the start of the season, something the 32-year-old has been looking forward to since the lads returned to training at the end of June.

Speaking to PNE PlayerHD after the game on Tuesday night, he said: "From the first day of pre-season you look forward to the league starting and your first priority is not to pick up injuries and to play as many minutes as you can.

"Basically you just work as hard as you can to get sharp, get fit and look forward to the start of the season and hopefully get picked for the first game.

"It was a good work out for us senior lads tonight, we knew Jordan and big Si were going to be a handful so we wanted to get balls up to them and play off them.

There were two young faces in the line up at Lancaster, with Dylan Davidson and Lewis Fensome starting alongside members of the first team squad and the PNE No.19 was impressed by what he saw.

"I think the highlight tonight is certainly the young lads who were involved to start with and the lads that have come on so the future is looking bright for Preston.

"The lads were brilliant, you wouldn't think that some of them don't even train with us they are that young so it's a brilliant occasion for them to play in a first team game and play against first team men.

"They are probably not used to the physicality of it so it could be a confidence boost for them and I think every single one of them did brilliantly tonight.

It was 16-year-old defender Lewis Fensome that opened the scoring on the night, and experienced midfielder Welsh was impressed by the centre back and his fellow scholars.

"He was quite quiet in the dressing room so I think he was a bit nervous but as soon as the whistle went he was up for it. He was winning headers, he scored a goal, he was organised and it really was a terrific night for him and I'm sure his dad will be proud of him!"

"All of the lads did brilliantly, Fenners and Dylan were brilliant and Adam [Robinson]. It was a good workout for us but to see these young kids coming through and doing really well is even better."
