A Derby Day To Remember For Daniel Johnson

10 December 2016

Preston North End's Daniel Johnson was understandably a happy man when he spoke to PNEPlayerHD after the derby victory against Blackburn.

The midfielder bagged a brace in the 3-2 win over Lancashire foes Blackburn in front of the cameras and under the lights at Deepdale - and Johnson admitted it wasn't a night that would be leaving the memory of the North End man any time soon.

"That's one I'm going to remember with the two goals and coming up with the winner," he said.

"We obviously knew what the win meant; for the fans and for the football club with the bragging rights and I'm just happy to get the win."

Johnson fired North End in front inside 20 minutes only for Rovers to hit back after Johnson fouled Sam Gallagher in the box; Danny Graham had his spot kick saved but managed to convert the rebound.

DJ soon made amends for his foul by converting his penalty at the other end, but North End were pegged back once again through Graham to bring it all square only for Callum Robinson to step up and grab the
winner with ten minutes left to play.

It's been a turbelent week for DJ after finding out he and his partner are expecting a baby, and the number 11 was glad to top off a memorable week with a memorable victory.

"Quite a few people say that's my trademark," he continued on gracefully curling North End ahead with a tidy finish in the top corner for his first goal.

"I'm happy to get the two goals but ultimately it was important that we got the win to move up the table.

"Before coming out, the gaffer told us to make sure we're on top of things and play in their half and that's what we managed to do to go 1-0 up. We listened to what the gaffer said and credit to the boys and myself.

On stepping up for the spot-kick, Johnson added: "We have banter on the training field and we practise them everyday and I always say whenever we get a penalty I'm top of the list!

"That's a joke of course but it comes down to who fancies it on the day and I fancied it so I'm just happy that I put it away.

"We knew they (Blackburn) were going to come out fighting, but we never gave up and I'm made up for Callum (Robinson) to get the winner.

"We see Greg making chances like that and Callum scoring those goals in training all of the time so it was good play and ultimately we got the win."
