The phony war of pre-season ended with a goalless draw at the Macron Stadium, a week ahead of ther big opener away at Reading.
The best chances for the Lilywhites came from balls from the left hand side. Firstly Joe Garner volleyed just over the bar from Greg Cunningham's cross from the left touchline. And then another ball in from the Irish No.3 saw Eoin Doyle stoop to head at goal, but straight at Mark Howard between the sticks for the Trotters.
With just under ten minutes before the interval PNE counter-attacked, again through Cunningham, who played the ball into Jermaine Beckford. The striker dummied for Garner, whose shot was blocked by David Wheater and a follow up from Cunningham flashed across the six yard box.
Right on half-time the home side's only really chance of the period came when Gary Madine's header was saved by Anders Lindegaard; skipper Darren Pratley fired home, but he was in an offside position.
Fourteen minutes after the break and North End could and perhaps should habe been ahead as Garner crossed the ball in from the right, which fell for Jermaine Beckford. The former Bolton man eased his defender away and fired hard, but high and over the bar - his last action before being replaced by Callum Robinson.
One of many substitutes Jordan Hugill met a corner from another change, Callum Robinson with ten minutes left on the clock, but his powerful effort was inches over the left hand corner of the bar.
The closing stages saw many changes by either side and the 90 minutes ran down beginning the countdown to the opener at the Madejski Stadium in a week's time..
