Tommo Gives Pre-Season Update

12 July 2016

North End first team coach Steve Thompson has been impressed with the facilities at their disposal during the training camp in Cork.

The PNE squad travelled to Fota Island on Sunday and have been working hard since their arrival.

With a triple session on Monday, the lads then played Fulham in a training match at the complex, and Thompson is delighted to have the full squad together to work on various aspects of their game.

"The facilities are absolutely fantastic so it's good to get everyone together. The lads are in the lodges and it gives the new lads a chance to get to know other players.

"So we can work hard on a few things before we go on to the serious stuff when we get back home.

"They are up in the morning and doing morning, afternoon and then evening sessions so we have got to be mindful that the sessions we put on are not too strenuous and nobody gets any silly injuries.

The training game was a chance to try out different systems and personnel, and despite the result, it was a beneficial workout.

"You tend to do things differently in pre-season, you wouldn't have three sessions the day before a game. It is pre-season, it gives us the chance to swap and change the team, some players will have 30 minutes and others will have 60.

"We want to make sure everyone ends up getting the same minutes to hopefully lead to everyone having three 90 minutes under their belts.

"They do feel a bit leggy and a bit stiff but once they get going it's not normally a problem.

"We have got to make sure we get all of the squad up to speed because you never know when you're going to need them

"We will be looking at different players in different scenarios and positions. The new lads will be coming in and will be desperate to get in to the team so it gets serious as we get closer to the start of the season.

"We will look at different systems, different shapes and what suits the players that we have brought in. It's enjoyable but it's tough for the lads and we've got a lot of things to work on and build on, but it's been good."
