Top Five Away Games 2016/17

22 June 2016

With the release of the fixtures earlier today, we take a look at the five of the best away trips for the North End faithful this coming season.

Burton Albion, Monday 2nd January 2017

One to tick off the list for most North End fans as this will be PNE's first ever visit to the Pirelli Stadium to face Burton Albion.

The Lilywhites will kick off 2017 with a trip to Staffordshire on the 2nd January to end a packed Christmas schedule.

Burton are one of the new boys to the division having gained automatic promotion from League One, after an incredible rise through the leagues.

Visits to new grounds are always an exciting prospect for supporters and players alike, and with the game on bank holiday Monday, it's sure to be a great occasion.

Aston Villa, Saturday 21st January 2017

After their relegation from the Premier League last season, this one of one the away fixtures that really stood out in the Championship.

There's no denying the size of the Club, and a first league trip to Villa Park since 1973 means it will be a first for many of the younger generation of PNE fans.

It's an exciting game in prospect with both Clubs steeped in history, and a return to his former side for North End boss Simon Grayson.

Wigan Athletic, Saturday 18th February 2017

Everyone loves a local derby, and after North End's success on the road in the derby games last year, it will be one to look out for again this time out.

After securing the League One title on the final day of the 2015/16 campaign, Wigan will be looking to build on their momentum from last season and have a successful first season back in the Championship after just a one year absence.

With just two local derbies this season, this is certainly one not to miss.

Blackburn Rovers, Saturday 18th March 2017

After a memorable visit to Ewood Park last season, the Deepdale faithful will be hoping for something similar again this year.

An incredible 7,000 strong away following helped cheer the Lilywhites on to a terrific 2-1 win over Rovers back in April.

The hosts took the lead on 13 minutes before goals from Joe Garner and Jordan Hugill sealed the three points for North End.

The rivalry will be renewed once again this season, and it's sure to be a bumper away following once again after last season's success.

Newcastle United, Saturday 22nd April

North End will make the trip to St James' Park in their penultimate away game of the campaign next April.

The two sides last faced each other back in the 2009/10 season with both sides in the Championship.

After six years in the top flight, the Magpies will be looking to make a swift return to the Premier League under the leadership of Rafael Benitez.

This match is one many fans looked for first when the fixtures were announced and the game could be of vital importance for either side being so late in the season.
