Both sides had to settle for a point after a goalless draw at Deepdale; with PNE now with only one defeat in their last nine games.

However, Simon Grayson’s men were left to rue yet another penalty decision and also had a chance with the last kick of the game, but took a point from a match where Chris Maxwell didn’t have a save to make.

The first half was a bitty affair, with little in the way of chances, the only shot of note coming seven minutes in when Jordan Hugill – who was kicked from pillar to post in the first period – controlled well and made a strong run inside, before shooting from 25 yards just wide of right hand upright.

The Lilywhites started the second half brightly though and Paul Gallagher fired just over the bar from the edge of the box eight minutes into it, after a headed clearance from inside the six yard box by the visitors was volleyed goalward by the No.12.

But that was virtually his last action, as the No.12 was forced off with an injury just before the hour mark and Simon Makienok was the man brought on to replace him, with Callum Robinson heading out to the left wing.

And the big Dane almost opened the scoring with 15 minutes left, as he rose to meet aa Alex Baptiste cross from the right, the effort beating Andrew Lonergan - playing his first game at Deepdale since leaving his boyhood club in 2011 - but it was onto the roof of the net.

With ten minutes to go Marnick Vermijl, who had only just come on, burst through the middle and was brought down as he was bearing down on Lonergan, only for the referee, James Linington, to not award a penalty, in the resulting scramble the ball fell to Aiden McGeady, but from a very tight angle he could only find the side-netting. To the majority in the ground it seemed a stonewall shout for a spot kick, but the Lilywhites still remain without one in 2016/17.

It looked like that was the last chance, until time added on the time added on! And North End could have won it with the last kick of the game. Five minutes of time was signalled, but in the sixth Makienok threaded Hugill clean through. The top scorer was one-on-one with Lonergan, and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper, but also over the bar and the Lilywhites had to settle for a point.
