John Welsh On A 'Great Day All Round'

1 October 2016

PNE's John Welsh knew going into the game that he wouldn't be the only 'Welsh' stepping out on to the Deepdale pitch this afternoon.

Welsh's two sons and three nephews walked out as mascots for the game, capping off a memorable day for the Liverpudlian who more than played his part as North End secured a 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Speaking to PNE PlayerHD after the game, Welsh described today's win as a real team effort.

"Going into the game, we knew it was going to be tough," he said.

"They've got some talented players and we knew if we gave them space and time you know you're going to get punished.

"We put a shift in and worked hard for each other which is everything we're good at and everyone to a man done that and we got the result for it.

"Everyone in the team wanted to work hard. Players who aren't usually known for putting tackles in were because they wanted to do it for a team.

"We gave it our all today."

On walking out with his family for the game, Welsh added: "It's something you look back on with the photos - I've just spoken to the kids just then and they're loving it. They've had a great day - they're smiling and their getting players to sign all of their shirts so it's just a great time.

"You have to obviously keep focused as a professional and make sure that my heads right but it was a great feeling for me seeing them out there and they loved every minute of it. They've had a great day and a result to cap it off so it's been a good day all round."

It's been a busy couple of weeks for the Lilywhites with the games coming thick and fast, and Welsh added that the International break will be a welcome break for himself and his team mates.

"The game's are going to come thick and fast this month," added Welsh. "A few of the players have had a few niggles so it gives them a chance to recover and a chance to recoup and get right. We've worked hard so it's been good to get a day off."
