McGeady Glad to Get Going

8 September 2016

Deadline Day signing Aiden McGeady is looking forward to getting back into action after joining PNE on a season-long loan.

McGeady trained with the squad for the first time on Thursday morning and the winger, has been on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, spent the morning getting used to the facilities at Springfields training ground.

“It’s been good. It’s like your first day at school. I knew one or two of the lads and got chatting to a few and training went well and it was just about trying to get to know the lads and the way the manager wants to play which was helpful.”

“I spoke to the manager beforehand and I know Greg [Cunningham] obviously, from being with Ireland but they were the only people I had spoken to.”

With the transfer window closing it was a long day of negotiations for most clubs and the winger gave insight into his experience of Deadline Day.

“On the last day of the transfer window I kind of heard in the morning that there was maybe the possibility of coming here and then found out the deal was off. Later on that afternoon I came back from training and it was maybe a possibility again.

“I didn’t really know what was going to happen and I missed the game because I didn’t know what was going to happen and to get it sorted.

McGeady who is desperate to get regular game-time pulled out of friend Robbie Keane’s last international match for the Republic of Ireland to make certain the deal went ahead.

“I know it was a great occasion for Robbie but first and foremost I didn’t want to be sat on my phone during the game or at halftime trying to figure out what I was going to do.

“I wanted to get everything sorted and there wasn’t much to wait on because by half eight it was sorted. After that I spoke to the manager and was glad everything was done.

“The last year-and-a-half have been the most frustrating of my career as I’ve been in and out of the team and not playing for long periods of time. So I see this as a good chance to play.”
