Spurr Focused On Good Start To The Season

2 August 2017

Tommy Spurr doesn’t want a repeat of the last two seasons at Deepdale and wants the team to get off to a strong start this campaign.

Over the last two seasons PNE haven't had the best start to the season but the defender wants to see a win against Sheffield Wednesday to kick start the campaign.

Speaking to iFollowPNE he said: “It’s always nice to play against Sheffield Wednesday with playing there for quite a few years so it’ll be nice to get one over them come Saturday.

“Each year it gets tougher and tougher, it’s going to be a tough game. Hopefully we can start off well - which we didn’t do last year and I believe we didn’t the year before - so hopefully we can get off to a good start and start the year well.”

Spurr has looked in good form in pre-season and the former Owl believes his preparation in his time off has left him in good stead.

“That’s what pre-season is for, to stake a claim, and the lads have all worked really hard and have performed in pre-season - hopefully I’ve done enough to get a start.

“I’m delighted to get a chance in a position I like and enjoy. I’ve just worked hard in the summer whilst we’ve not been training and tried to come back in the best shape I can.”

A major focus of pre-season for the squad has been to familiarise themselves with Alex Neil’s new passing based approach and Tommy believes they’ve taken to it straight away.

“The gaffer has come in and tried to set a new style of playing and the lads have taken to it straight away. I think it showed in the second half on Friday at Fleetwood that the lads have really bought into it and are putting it into practice so hopefully we can take that into Saturday.

“Like the gaffer said after the game it’s enjoyable to play in. When it’s like that you tend to play a lot better, when you’re enjoying it, so hopefully we can take that into the proper season games and get off to a flying start.”
