The Tykes came to PR1 on the same weekend – straight after the first international break – last season and despite Aiden McGeady’s stunning debut goal, went on to take the three points back to Yorkshire.

Manager Paul Heckingbottom spoke to the press on Thursday and was looking forward to restarting the action.

“All of the lads have smiles on their faces and can't wait to get underway again. We've been working hard and improving all the time,” he told the press.

“The schedule this month could be huge and we need to take that into account, we'll need everybody in top condition.

“Every bit of success we've ever had has been down to everybody working, never an individual, that's the message we get across.”

And the Barnsley box was very complimentary about side he would be coming up against.

“Preston play with so much energy, that's their standout quality. They've had a solid start and have some really good players."

Also speaking to the press was the Reds’ deadline day signing Gary Gardner, who joined on loan from Aston Villa, and he has been impressed by the squad he was joining.

“When I heard of the interest from Barnsley I jumped at it. I wanted to work with the Gaffer here. I'm delighted to be here,” said the midfield man.

“I've been really impressed so far with everything about the place, I can't wait to get playing and help to drive the boys on.”
