Hughes Looking Up

15 December 2018

With North End recording back to back wins and making it just one defeat in 12, defender Andrew Hughes has his eyes set on the top half of the table rather than the bottom.

The Lilywhites’ 3-2 win over Millwall sees Alex Neil’s side into 15thplace in the table, just eight points off the Play-Offs, and Hughes - who scored his second goal of the season today is feeling confident going into the Christmas calendar.

“It’s a massive win for us and puts us higher up in the table” declared Hughes in his post-match interview with iFollowPNE.

“We can now start to climb and get into the top half of the table.

“We’re one defeat in 12 and stopping the draws and getting the wins instead now which is important. It wasn’t pretty but all PNE fans will be happy leaving the stadium today.”

Hughes’ goal in the 81stminute proved the decisive strike after Lee Gregory hit back for Millwall in added time, and the Welshman was delighted to get his name on scoresheet.

“Gally’s usually the first port of call on the free kicks with his wand,” continued Hughes.

“But it being at the angle it was I fancied myself on it, it was a similar angle to my West Brom goal and lucky for us it went in.

“Getting the goals were important to us in the first half but we said at half-time the next goal was massive.

“Unfortunately for us they got the next goal but once the third one went in it settled the nerves, even if they did score right at the end but we got the job done.

“We knew they were going to sit back and that we’d have lots of the ball. We were just waiting for a chance to open up.”

“Millwall are a physical side and we knew that in the meeting on Friday and they were going to win their fair share of headers but all that matters is the three points.”

Hughes' interview is now available to watch on iFollowPNE now.
