Davies Keen To Continue Development

23 January 2018

Defender Ben Davies is looking to continue his progress, after staking a claim in the starting Xl on a regular basis this season.

The 22-year-old has been at the club since the age of 11, and despite making his first team debut at the age of 17, it is this season that has seen the defender make his mark at Deepdale.

Davies has started 21 games in the Championship this campaign under Alex Neil, and after scoring his first goal for the club at the weekend, the Academy graduate is pleased with his progress since that debut back in 2013.

"It feels like I've been all over the place since my debut, I haven't played that many games but I've managed to get my foot in the door a bit this year. I've had a couple of chances but I'm just glad that I could knock one in.

"I was just happy to get it over the line and celebrate with my teammates and get back on with the game because it was still early in the game and we had a lot of work to do.

"My only other goal was for Fleetwood last year and we won that 1-0 so I definitely enjoyed the occasion a bit more that day but there is no better feeling than scoring for this club when I've been here for all these years.

On his own development this season, Davies admits he is looking to add more goals to his game from the back, something he and the manager have discussed in recent weeks.

"The manager mentioned to me a few weeks ago now that he's been pleased with me but asked me what I thought the next step was and we both agreed that it was to get some goals.

"It's taken a few weeks on from that conversation but I've finally got one so hopefully it will be like buses and two or three will come at once now."

Despite making his PNE debut four and a half years ago, Ben has had to be patient for another shot at first team football, and feels that adds to his hunger to succeed and improve now he has had a taste of regular football in the Championship.

"Being away from here for a while and then coming back and finally being able to stay in the team, it's a great feeling.

"It makes me even more determined now to stay in the team because of how hard I have worked to get here.

"I think everyone develops at different rates and it's taken me until now, I don't think I was ready before this season really. It's taken me until now to get a good run in the team so I definitely don't want to pass it up and I want to kick on again.

"It helps when the manager has shown that he's got confidence in me from the start because it just relaxes you and makes you think that you can do it and so far this season I've felt fine at Championship level.

"I've just been enjoying the different challenge every week really because no game has been the same and I just want to keep learning and improve further."
