Alex Neil: "As A Squad We Are Stronger"

14 July 2018

North End continued their pre-season preparations with another victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Lilywhites were 6-1 winners over AFC Fylde, taking their goalscoring tally to 13 in the first two games of the summer schedule.

The gaffer was pleased to see his side's sharp shooting continue, and feels there is still more to come.

Speaking to iFollow PNE after the win at Mill Farm, the gaffer said: "I thought the boys worked really hard, we are moving up in class, we played Bamber Bridge last week and now Fylde who were in the Play-Offs of the Conference last year so they were good opposition and I thought we equipped ourselves really well.

"To score six goals in any game is always pleasing and I think more importantly it could have been more, we hit the woodwork a couple of times and we probably missed easier chances than what we scored. As I've said before, the final bit in terms of quality and sharpness in the final third is always the last thing to come.

"Callum has scored two absolute screamers but he missed two easier opportunities but the good thing is he is getting in those positions. If you take any game where you score two goals and could have scored two more then you would put that down as a good afternoon."

The manager once again rotated his squad during the game, this time after the hour make, and with both Xl's showing their quality on the pitch, the manager feels his squad as a whole is already stronger than last season.

"As you can see we have got two really strong XI's at the moment, I don't think that there is any question that as a squad we are stronger.

"I think we are in a position now, certainly in comparison to last year, where I have got two players per position that could come in and I don't think there would be a massive amount of difference which is always pleasing and they are all fighting for their places to get in to the team.

"We demand an intensity about the way we play, the players now demand an intensity about the way they want to work so it's really good to be a part of at the moment and like we've seen today, they are desperate to do well and win.

"I'm really pleased with everyone, I feel like we've come a long way in terms of how we go about our work. I think there's a clear identity about how we play now and I think you could notice that as soon as the game started."
