Barky Happy To Get Off The Mark

17 July 2018

Tom Barkhuizen got off the mark for pre-season in style with a hat-trick against Cobh Ramblers at Turner's Cross.

North End continued their fine goalscoring form with a 5-0 win in Cork, Barkhuizen scoring three first-half goals to set the Lilywhites on their way to a third successive win in pre-season.

With Alex Neil's side scoring 18 goals in the first three games of the summer, the 25-year-old told iFollow PNE: "It's a good sign, last year we scored a few goals in pre-season but we seem to have taken it to another level.

Alex Neil Given ‘Food For Thought’

"I think the way we play, we are still implementing that in pre-season, the pressing is high, at this early stage teams don't seem to like it, especially the lower level teams.

"We are sharing the goals around and thankfully for me tonight, I managed to get off the mark and hopefully there is more to come.

"It's always good to get minutes, training is always difficult in pre-season but everyone enjoys playing games so it's nice to get another few goals as a team.

"We are racking them up in pre-season, it doesn't matter who you play against, it's always good to get goals and thankfully we got another five tonight." He continued.

"The gaffer has told us we can't rest on last season and the lads who played a lot last season have got to start again, me included. I've started pretty slow compared to the others, it's been a bit frustrating for me but thankfully tonight I managed to get three and hopefully there's many more to come."

With plenty of North End fans making the trip to support the boys, Barkhuizen was pleased to send them home happy with a win and plenty to cheer about.

"It was surprising to see so many Preston fans, I'm not sure whether they were all Seani and Browney's family to be honest!

"We have always had a good following and thankfully we have managed to put on a good performance and hopefully they go home happy."
