Gally Urges Squad To Be More Clinical This Year

14 July 2018

Paul Gallagher wants North End to take what they've done so far in pre-season into the games where it matters after PNE recorded another 6-1 victory today against AFC Fylde.

Gallagher came on for the last third of the game and witnessed North End convert a further three goals during that time to add another comprehensive victory to their pre-season calendar.

It sees North End score 12 goals in two games, and after a season which North End sometimes struggled in front of goal, Gallagher feels the side are more equipped this season to have a better conversion rate in finding the net.

"I keep saying to the boys that are scoring goals, keep scoring them and build that confidence - there's no better feeling than scoring goals - we're a little bit disappointed we conceded a penalty right at the end for that clean sheet but we're still pleased.

"We've worked hard in training and on that aspect of the game in getting into the final area. Last year, that may have let us down a bit - we got into numerous positions but didn't always find the net and we've worked really hard on that this year.

"We've got some real quality options and the two teams that have played today could probably play in a league game against each other and be competitive in the league, so we have got a really big squad here and we've almost got two players for every position really and we're looking very strong.

"There's competition for places straightaway because everybody's fighting for a position. I don't think anybody's safe or guaranteed a place, but we're all encouraging each other, we're in it altogether.

"We came so close last season and we've got a group that wants to do better and like I've said plenty of times the only way we can get better is by sticking together, and adding that little bit of quality at the top end of the pitch by scoring goals and we've done that in pre-season and we've got to continue that.

As one of the senior heads in the squad, Gallagher has done his fair share of pre-seasons over the years, and the 33-year-old spoke about a pre-season which has been enjoyable yet intense.

"It's been really enjoyable," continued Gallagher. "Everybody wants to play the games but you have to put the work in during the week in training for pre-season. To be fair we've done the running, even with the ball and it's been a real intense couple of weeks in training.

"It's been real intense and the manager wants that intensity to get the quality out of us, and coming into the games for the last two games, we've scored a number of goals.

"We know it's going to get harder with the teams we've got left to play, but we're enjoying it, and we're getting our confidence up and scoring plenty of goals."

For more reaction from Gallagher on today's game, there'll be a full interview on iFollowPNE later this evening.
