Andrew Hughes Aiming For Progression

21 June 2018

New signing Andrew Hughes is hoping that he makes personal and team progression after completing his move to Deepdale.

The left back spoke to iFollow PNE after putting pen to paper and said that he hoped the team could improve on their positional finish of seventh last campaign.

“The aim for every club is to beat the position they finished the previous season and if we can do that it means we will be in the Play-Offs, so that has to be the aim at least,” he said.

“It is clearly a good group and a good dressing room here and it is something I am looking forward to being a part of.

“The manager has got a lot of work done early, so we can get that bond together and that can be a key factor this season.

“I enjoyed myself in League One, but I am now looking forward to the challenge of the Championship. As a player you always want to challenge yourself at the highest level possible and I am looking forward to it.”

The move came about quickly and the 26-year-old was pleased with his three-year deal: “I am delighted to get it over the line,” he continued. “It has all happened quite quickly and I can’t wait to get started now.

“It is good to get it over the line and wrapped up before pre-season starts, which means I can concentrate on my football. I will have confidence in my own game, trust in myself and can just get on with playing.”

He already knows a couple of the dressing room and believes he will have something to add to the squad: “I know Billy Bodin, having played against him many times at youth level and I played with Ben Davies at Newport.

“It is always easier coming to a club where you know someone.

“I like to join in the attack when it’s the right time. As a full back at six foot two, I carry that aerial threat as well, I don’t lose many headers and do a job at the back stick, which I think is important as a full back.

“I am good in possession of the ball as well. It is good to have as many games as I have is good experience. I played men’s football from a young age, which is key,” he added.
