Room For Improvement For Alex Neil

24 October 2018

Although satisfied that North End picked up maximum points at Deepdale tonight, Alex Neil acknowledged that there are still things for his side to work on as North End made it back to back wins at Deepdale.

The manager would have been pleased with his side's efforts in front of goal tonight as PNE scored four for the second home game in succession, but the visitors will have been buoyed by their late fightback with the game finishing 4-3 at Deepdale.

In his post-match interview with iFollowPNE, Alex said: “It was good when we went 3-0 up of course and then after that obviously you can understand a lot of apprehension as we’ve been involved in a lot of high scoring games recently.

“We certainly didn’t make it easy and defensively it’s something we need to improve on but I think two of the goals are hard to stop. We’ve got things to work on but that’s us four games unbeaten now and two wins at home where we’ve scored four goals in both games which is certainly pleasing.”

North End went ahead as early as the fifth minute through Alan Browne who toe poked the pall past the Brentford ‘keeper, Daniel Bentley before Callum Robinson doubled the advantage with a fantastic finish from outside the box.

Tom Barkhuizen made it three, getting the last touch off Lukas Nmecha’s powerful drive, but Brentford hit back with goals either side of half-time.

Robinson grabbed his brace to settle the nerves, but those jitters returned when Neal Maupay reduced deficit back to one, but Alex’s side held on for another three points to move them further up the table.

“We simplified things today and didn’t take too many risks at the back,” analysed the Scotsman.

“We got the ball forward and went and played from there, however, they’ve got some good players and they move the ball well but I thought we deserved our victory and had some good opportunities where we could have scored more.”

On Robinson’s brace which gives him his eighth goal of the season, the manager added: “We’ve spoken about Callum this season in terms of how far he’s come on as a player. He’s confident and understands his position really well. He works hard for the team and that’s another two goals again today and he’s a major threat for us going forward.

“Our main goal at the moment is to collect points and move up the league and we’ve done that tonight. I was at one of the games last night where the other teams around us are picking up points so it was crucial that we did the same.

“We’ve got things to work on – the fact that we’re conceding far too many goals at the moment and we need to fix that but like I say the most important thing is to win the game.

“There was a lot of good performances all over the pitch tonight and I’m hoping we can take that into next Saturday.”
