Memorable Match: Leeds United

17 September 2018

We won’t look back on many goalless draws in our memorable match pieces, but this one in 2005 at Elland Road had plenty going on.

The game, on bonfire night 2005, saw the Lilywhites head across the Pennines to face the Whites for the first time since the likes of Sean Gregan, Eddie Lewis and David Healy had all signed for Kevin Blackwell’s side.

And it was a game in the middle of a spell of results where North End were a tough nut to crack and that proved to be the case on the day as Billy Davies’ stubborn side ground out a hard-earned point against United

Liam Miller made his debut for Leeds on loan from Manchester United that day and he had the first real chance, curling a delightful 25-yard effort that Carlo Nash did well to save.

But North End’s back line was solid forcing Leeds boss Blackwell to attempt to breath new life into his side's faltering attack, bringing on Robbie Blake and Jonathon Douglas.

With seven minutes remaining, the unmarked Nathan Blake fired in a shot, but Nash produced another fine save and it was actually the Lilywhites and the pace of David Nugent and Patrick Agyemang that almost brought a winner in the closing stages, only for veteran Scottish stopper Neil Sullivan to deny the two pacy forwards in quick succession, to leave the game deadlocked.

After the game Leeds boss Kevin Blackwell said: “Liam Miller only joined us on Friday, but he did well. The pace of the Championship is different from the Premiership and you can't dwell on the ball.

“I am pleased for him that he has got a game under his belt because he wasn't getting many opportunities at Manchester United.”

Whilst North End manager Billy Davies added: “We should have won the game and I am disappointed that we didn't. Leeds started the second half well, but we controlled the game after that, but we just haven't had the breaks.

“I am not worried that we are drawing so many games. I would be worried if we were not playing well, but we are. We just need to take more chances.”
