Since then Aitor Karanka has left, to be replaced by a man with a legendary playing status for the Reds, Martin O’Neill, with another ex-player, Roy Keane, joining him to help steer the club in its aims to return to the top flight for the first time since the late 1990s.

A number of January acquisitions have also bolstered an already impressive squad at the disposal of the pair who had been until late 2018, been looking after the fortunes of the Republic of Ireland, including North End trio Alan Browne, Sean Maguire and Callum Robinson – who were all given their international bow by O’Neill.

The Lilywhites, meanwhile, go into the game full of confidence. Four wins from the last five games and six unbeaten since the first league game of 2019, they are on an upward trajectory and looking to try and make it nine points from nine from a tricky week of fixtures.
