Sean Maguire Makes First Competitive Ireland Start

24 March 2019

North End striker Sean Maguire made his first competitive start for Republic of Ireland on Saturday evening.

Maguire was named in the starting Xl for the Euro 2020 qualifier against Gibraltar as Mick McCarthy took charge of his first game since returning as Ireland boss.

Ireland were 1-0 winners on the night, with the 24-year-old playing 72 minutes before making way for Harry After.

The winner came just after half-time, with Sheffield United's David McGoldrick setting up Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick for the only goal of the game.

After kicking off the campaign with a win, Ireland take on Georgia in Dublin on Tuesday night before Maguire returns to Springfields with the focus switching back to Championship action.
