Hafizul Rahman and Joe Rodwell-Grant were on the scoresheet as the youth team twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Walsall.

Rahman struck just before half-time to ensure parity at the halfway stage, only minutes after the Lilywhites had missed a chance to equalise from the penalty spot, with the visitors having taken the lead midway through the first half.

The Saddlers regained their advantage only five minutes into the second half, but Joe Rodwell-Grant got the slightest of touches to a corner to see North End equalise again to take a point from the game.

Academy manager Nick Harrison made five changes to the team that beat Oldham Athletic last weekend. Lewis Coulton was unavailable due to his upcoming international commitments with Scotland, while Jimmy Corcoran returned from his own endeavours with his native Republic of Ireland to regain his spot in goal.

Levi Lewis came in for Coulton and there were also returns to the side for Tyler Williams and goalscorers Rahman and Rodwell-Grant.

The Lilywhites came into the game off the back of winning their last two matches, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock after 23 minutes.

There was a chance to equalise for North End a quarter of an hour later as a penalty was awarded their way, but Rodwell-Grant’s effort from 12 yards was kept out by the ‘keeper diving low to his left.

However, Harrison’s team did equalise moments later in the 43rd minute, with a blistering counter attack from a Walsall corner seeing Rahman tap home from close range, following a low cross to him in space from the right flank.

Walsall retook the lead in the 50th minute but Rodwell-Grant managed to make amends for his earlier miss to score North End’s second equaliser of the day.

The Saddlers ‘keeper failed to hold a corner and Rodwell-Grant reacted quickly to help the bouncing loose ball over the line in the 73rd minute.

The Lilywhites couldn’t muster another goal to extend their winning run, but they did at least make it three matches unbeaten with the draw.

The youth team now face back-to-back away matches over the next two weekends, with trips to Notts County in the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday 26th October and to Carlisle United on Saturday 2nd November coming up.

PNE line-up: Corcoran; Huddart, Williams, McFayden, Lewis; Nolan, Dooley; Potts (Holland-Wilkinson), Dolan, Rahman (Bennett, 66); Rodwell-Grant. Subs not used: Nicholson, Lombard, Blanchard.
