Alex Neil On Change To Backroom Staff

29 July 2020

Manager Alex Neil paid tribute to departing goalkeeper coach Jonathan Gould and welcomed his successor Mike Pollitt who joins the backroom staff at Deepdale.

Jonathan Gould's departure was confirmed following his decision to return to New Zealand with his family and the gaffer felt his impact on the goalkeepers was clear to see during his second spell with the club .

"Jonathan and I had a lengthy discussion and obviously if his family are moving he needs to follow suit, he didn't want to leave, we didn't want him to leave but we understand the situation and it's obviously with a heavy heart that he leaves us.

"He has been a great servant while he was here, he certainly helped Declan, he was a great addition to the backroom team and we wish him well.

"I think Matt Hudson has developed a lot as well under him, that's something the fans wouldn't necessarily see so much because he hasn't played but I think he's had a big influence on the goalkeepers and I think the lads have performed well throughout the season. He has done well for us and we obviously wish him well with whatever he chooses to do next."

While Gould departs, the club moved quickly to fill the position and welcome former Wigan Athletic and Rotherham United goalkeeper Mike Pollitt to Alex Neil's coaching team.

Speaking of the appointment, the manager continued: "I think it was important that we got somebody in a similar vein to Jonathan, who has been about and worked with top goalkeepers.

"He has got that element of experience and hopefully he can be a steady influence on the goalkeepers. I think he will be a great addition to us and hopefully going forward he can show what he's capable of.

"I think he will be very good for the goalkeepers, they have learnt from Jonathan and hopefully Mike can pass on his knowledge and experience on to them as well and that should stand them in good stead.

"We haven't got a lot of time before we are back, and I think particularly for hte goalkeepers, they will be eager to know who they are working with and they will want that appointment to happen as quickly as possible and so we haven't messed about, we've got him right away and the position has been addressed quickly which is great for us."
