On This Day… 12th May

12 May 2020

With a lot of seasons already finished, there are only a couple of events to look back on in our latest ‘on this day’ feature.

The first of those is a look back to 36 years ago, when the Lilywhites ended the season with a derby day victory at Deepdale.

It was the last hurrah of the 1983/84 season with 2-1 home win over Bolton Wanderers, thanks to goals from Jonathan Clark and Steve Elliott's final goal before his summer move to Luton Town.
Sadly, there were only 5,085 in attendance at end of disappointing season, but worse was to follow in next two seasons, with relegation then re-election, before John McGrath got them back moving in the right direction.
Our second thing to note on the 12th May is that today Scottish defender John Blackley celebrates 72nd birthday, happy birthday John!

The former lilywhite had an established career with Hibernian then Newcastle United and as Scottish international.

He arrived at Deepdale in 1979 and helped develop career of Mick Baxter at centre half. He weas famous for playing with no shin pads and socks rolled down!
