On This Day… 14th May

14 May 2020

We’ve got a couple of birthdays and a Play-Off game to reflect upon in today’s ‘on this day’ look back.

The first of those celebrations is for Louis Moult, who turns 28 today. Louis, who joined the club from Motherwell, has spent much of this season sidelined after an ACL injury picked up at Swansea City back in August – we wish Louis a happy birthday and hope to see him back soon!

Another player, this time fomer, who is celebrating today is 1983 player of the year winner, Don O'Riordan, who turns 63 today.
He joined PNE from Tulsa Roughnecks in America in 1978 and made 176 appearances over the next five years.
He had to wait three years for the first of his nine goals for North End and joined Carlisle in 1983 and was also player-manager of Torquay United when we faced them in the 1994 Play-Offs… more of that later in the week.

Finally, we lost the home leg of the 1995 third division Play-Offs to Bury on this game 25 years ago, the score finishing 1-0 to the Shakers, who repeated scoreline three days later at Gigg Lane… although we reacted well to win the same league 12 months later.
