On This Day… 16th May

16 May 2020

There are a couple of former PNE players who were born on this date down the years, both with great connections and memories of Deepdale.

One of the two is sadly no longer with us and that is Charlie Wayman, who was born 99 years ago today!

Charlie scored in the 1954 FA Cup Final amongst his 117 goals for North End, scored in only 171 games! Even more remarkable was his FA Cup record, with 12 goals in 14 matches.

Only 5'5", he was a prolific scorer throughout his career with Newcastle United, Southampton, the Lilywhites, Middlesbrough and Darlington, finding the net 277 times in 412 career games.
Charlie shares his birthday with club stalwart Mick Wearmouth who is 76 today.
Mick was only 19 when he joined from his native Barrow, but he already had 34 appearances under his belt, having made his debut at 18.

He only played a dozen times for North End before enjoying a long career with Chorley, where he later became secretary and he performed the same role back at Deepdale.

He is still a regular attender at both clubs and a fantastic servant down the years to the Magpies and the Lilywhites – happy birthday Mick!
