On This Day… 9th May

9 May 2020

Not a lot to look back on for May 9th down the years, with many seasons already over by now, but we do have a couple of things to look back on.

On this day in 1987, we celebrated our promotion season with the final game of the season, a 1-0 home win over Colchester United at Deepdale.

John McGrath’s side had secured promotion four games previously, with the 2-1 win over Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road, but this was to be the day the champagne could come out as fans invaded the plastic pitch and the players sang and celebrated from the top tier of the old Pavilion.

This game also proved to be the last game of one of that season’s goalscoring heroes, John Thomas’ first spell at Deepdale after his goals had help take us up, but he would return to the club later on.

The other look back for today’s article came over 100 years ago! This saw Bill Tremelling, the dominant centre half in the 1930s side, was born on this day in 1904.
